Need somewhere safe?
Ages 12–18 · Free · Open 24 hours
If you need a safe place to stay, call Dorie’s House. You can call for yourself.
Eligibility + access
Is this for me?
- Age
- 12–18 inclusive
- Who can stay?
- Youth of all genders.
- Where do I need to live?
- We prioritize youth from Swift Current and southwest Saskatchewan. If you live somewhere else in Saskatchewan, you can still call.
- Does it cost anything?
- No. Your stay, meals and basic necessities are free.
- How long can I stay?
- Usually up to 90 days. If you need longer, an extension can be considered.
- What if I’ve been drinking or using?
- You can still call Dorie’s House. Drinking or using does not automatically mean you cannot stay. Staff will ask how you’re doing and whether Dorie’s House can support you safely. If you need immediate medical care or supervised detox, you may need to go to the hospital first.
First contact
What happens first?
Call when you can
You can call for yourself. A parent, caregiver, teacher, worker, friend or someone else you trust can also help make the call. Staff will want to talk with you too.
Tell us what’s going on
We’ll ask whether you’re safe, what you need, and a few questions about health, medications and alcohol or drug use. You don’t need to fill anything out before you call.
Figure out what happens next
If Dorie’s House can safely support you, we’ll tell you what to expect when you arrive. If you need another kind of help first, we’ll explain why and help figure out the next step.
If you’re already here, come to the door. Staff will talk with you and figure out what happens next. Calling first helps us get ready for you, but you can still come if you weren’t able to call.
When you arrive
You do not need to have everything figured out.
A change of clothes, prescribed medications and anything you need for a stay are useful. If you arrive with very little, that is okay too. Basic toiletries and necessities can be provided.
When you get here, we’ll talk about what you need and get the important information we need from you. Then you can have something to eat, shower and get settled into the House.
Personal phones and valuables are stored securely. Staff can help coordinate phone contact with family or other supports.
All meals are provided. Emergency shelter is a free service.
You can keep up with school while you’re here. Our teacher liaison can work with Maverick School, Chinook School Division and your home school.
We can help you stay in touch with family or other people you trust when it is safe and appropriate.
A parent or legal guardian needs to consent before you can stay at Dorie’s House. You can still call us yourself. If contacting your parent or guardian is not safe or possible, tell us. We’ll help figure out what needs to happen next.
Will you call Social Services? Not just because you called Dorie’s House or asked for a bed. Staff must report when they have reason to believe a child or youth needs protection. If that applies, they’ll explain what they need to do and why.
Another next step
What if Dorie’s House can’t take me?
We’ll help look for another safe option. That can include another shelter or working with Social Services when needed.
Dorie’s House isn’t a hospital or detox centre. If you need emergency medical care, detox or another level of support first, we’ll help connect you with the right service.
