Board + governance

How Southwest YES is governed.

Southwest YES is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. The Board is responsible for governance, policy, strategic direction, oversight and accountability. Day-to-day operations are led by the Executive Director within the authority delegated by the Board.

Accountability

Governance and operations are different jobs.

Board of Directors

Governs + oversees.

The Board holds responsibility for the organization’s direction and accountability rather than managing each day of service delivery.

  • Approves policy and strategic direction
  • Provides financial and risk oversight
  • Appoints, supports and evaluates the Executive Director
  • Approves matters reserved to the Board by law, bylaws, contracts or policy
Executive Director

Leads day-to-day operations.

The Executive Director turns approved direction into day-to-day operations at Dorie’s House within policy, budget, contracts and delegated authority.

  • Leads staffing and daily operations
  • Manages service delivery and organizational systems
  • Works with funders, partners and community agencies
  • Reports performance, risk and material issues to the Board

Organizational direction

What guides Southwest YES.

Board-adopted vision, mission and values set the direction for how Southwest YES serves young people, works with families and partners, and makes organizational decisions.

Vision

Southwest Youth Emergency Shelter Inc. provides a safe, secure living environment for youth in order to build their resiliency and strengthen their foundations into adulthood. We empower youth towards independence through skill building and connectivity with family and community, encouraging them to make positive choices around substance use, mental health, and safe shelter.

Mission

To provide safe, secure shelter and support for youth in order to connect them to community support services.

Values

At all levels of the organization we agree to operate under the following values:

Youth + potential

We value youth and their potential, including their right to be heard and to self-determination.

Whole-person wellbeing

We value a holistic approach to seeking harmony and balance in the lives of individuals.

Growth

We believe we all have the right to make mistakes, change and grow as individuals.

Rights + equality

We believe in basic human rights and equality rights regardless of race, religion, gender, sexual identity, ability, age, and socio-cultural status.

People

We value staff, volunteers, and board members.

Respect

We believe in respect for self, others, property, and the environment.

Pride

We believe in having pride in who we are.

Community

We value community support and assistance in addressing the needs of youth at risk.
